Introduction

Transmission fluid lubricates gears and bearings, carries heat away and, in automatic transmissions, transmits hydraulic pressure that makes shifts happen. Over time heat and friction break the fluid down. A transmission fluid change on the right schedule is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect one of the most expensive parts of your vehicle.

When to change transmission fluid

Intervals vary widely by vehicle. Some manufacturers list a specific mileage, others describe the fluid as long-life under normal conditions but recommend service under severe use such as towing, heavy stop-and-go traffic or extreme temperatures, all common in Chicago. Check your owner's manual or ask us to look up the schedule during a transmission fluid service.

Fluid change vs. flush

A drain-and-fill or pan service replaces a portion of the fluid and, on many vehicles, allows the filter to be replaced. A flush uses equipment to exchange more of the fluid. The appropriate method depends on the transmission design and manufacturer guidance. Using the exact fluid specification is critical, especially for CVTs and modern multi-speed automatics.

Signs of transmission fluid problems

Watch for delayed or harsh shifts, slipping, a shudder at low speed, a burning smell, red or brown drips under the car, or a transmission warning light. Fluid that looks dark or smells burnt should be evaluated. Some symptoms may relate to other drivetrain components such as CV axles.

Don't forget the other drivetrain fluids

All-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles and many trucks have differentials and transfer cases with their own fluid. A differential fluid exchange follows its own interval. Browse the full transmission and drivetrain category.

Common questions

How do I know which transmission fluid my car needs?

The owner's manual or the dipstick/fill plug label lists the specification. We confirm the correct fluid for your exact transmission before service.

Can old transmission fluid cause shifting problems?

Degraded fluid can contribute to harsh or delayed shifts, but shifting issues can also have mechanical or electronic causes. We inspect before recommending work.

Do you service CVT transmissions?

Call with your year, make and model and we will confirm the service and fluid required for your CVT.
